Rookie Goes for 6 in a row @ Ironman UK Week 1/25

Areet?

Here we go again!

Yes, I’ll be hoping to make it 6 in a row at Bolton this year…..

Oh ffs Rookie….

I’m not alone…..

Loads of lads I know have done the Ironman multiple times…..

It costs over £500 to enter and we have absolutely no chance of winning the race, yet every year, hundreds of us come back for more…..

Why is this?…..

I find that question fascinating…..

I asked a few ‘multi timers’ what keeps them coming back….

Their answers ranged from ‘I enjoy the challenge’ to ‘I’m unhinged’

‘Unhinged’ lol…..

I love that…..

Definitely true here…..

No better example of that than to tell you how I have been living my life for the last 5 years…..

It goes like this…..

From January to July I live like an ‘athlete’……

No drinking, no smoking, training every day, trying to eat right, watching the weight, you get the picture……

Then, just as I have got myself into ‘peak’ physical condition, I do the exact opposite, pressing self destruct from July to December, living like a pisshead and saying yes to everything instead of no, turning into a fat bastard in the process whilst pissing all me money up the wall…..

Why the hell do I do that?

Told you…..

‘Unhinged’……

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed myself for the last 6 months…..

But the price you pay for ‘enjoying yourself’ is at least 3 stone of excess lard and a beer gut……

Not exactly what the chicks are looking for, is it?

Idiot…..

So in my case, it’s partly the challenge…..

If you asked me if I could complete an Ironman right now I would say I’ve absolutely no chance…..

Turning your life around and getting yourself into a condition where completing an Ironman could be possible for you once again…..

It’s very addictive….

In addition, it’s the process of training for it and what happens when you do so……

The ‘zing’…….

Anyone who has ever done one knows what I am talking about here…….

But for me, It’s also definitely about the supporters…..

Limping up Chorley new Road absolutely fucked in the dark when everyone else has long finished, yet still being roared on by hundreds of supporters outside retreat is a truly magical experience…..

Haunting even……

So it’s not £500 to enter Ironman……

It’s £500 to experience ‘all of the above’…..

I‘ll be posting a weekly update on training adventures every Sunday if you fancy a read/laugh
