IMUK 2020

Rookie goes for 4 in a row @ Ironman UK Week 14 of 28

As always, thoughts and prayers to all those with the virus and their loved ones.

In addition, thanks to all the front line public sector staff, wagon drivers, shelf stackers and everyone else doing their bit to keep the country fed and watered during this terrible time.

I continue to battle my emotions on the training front…

On the one hand, I feel that bouncing out there fresh as a daisy with all me Ironman gear on is somehow disrespectful to all those currently battling the dreadful illness…

On the other, i’ve got to be honest…..

I’m addicted…..

Addicted to the training like…..

Lock me in the house and let me out for just one training session per day and i’m happy as a pig in shit….

But lock me in the house and tell me I can’t train and I turn into Dr David Banner (google him)…

Also, the way I see it, the government are fuelling my addiction by actively encouraging those who can to get out there and exercise….

Every single day….

On that note, I got to thinking…

The government have given us just 2 choices for our daily ‘fix’….

  1. Put yer trainers on and go for a run
  2. Get on your bike

Whilst we count our blessings that we are still able to exercise, most of us have seen a bomb go off under our previous training schedule…

However, could it be possible that being forced to rethink our training plans could potentially improve our performance??

Case in point, here is what my training schedule looked like before lockdown…

Mon : Pool mile (felt like a day off)

Tues : Weights session (felt like a day off)

Weds : 45 min watt bike (working)

Thursday : Pool Mile (felt like a day off)

Friday : Weights session (felt like a day off)

Saturday : lap of the IMUK bike circuit (working)

Sunday : 10k run (working)

And here is what it looked like this week…

Monday : 10k run (working) www.strava.com/activities/3262491513

Tuesday : 10 mile bike TT (working) www.strava.com/activities/3265258323

Wednesday : 10k run (working) www.strava.com/activities/3271538599

Thursday : 10 mile bike TT (working) www.strava.com/activities/3275750952

Friday : 7 x Hunters Hill reps on bike (working) www.strava.com/activities/3278674505

Saturday : 10k run (working) www.strava.com/activities/3282737281

Sunday : 30 mile TT on bike (working) www.strava.com/activities/3288254663

Look at the difference between the two….

I was clearly in a massive comfort zone ‘pre lockdown’ and the gym being closed has forced me to snap out of it….

The volume and intensity of both the bike and run work has massively increased and these are the areas where for most of us, the biggest gains can be made….

Already i’m feeling fitter and leaner and I definitely reckon I am onto something with the new bike sessions….

I can feel it….

Look, I know training conditions are tough at present, they are tough for all of us, but ‘old skool’ magic is still out there waiting to be discovered…

You just need to go looking for it…

What effect will this new schedule have on my IMUK bike loop?

Time will tell…

In the meantime, I wish you and your loved ones all the best….
